Understanding the Balance Between Material Actions and Spiritual Awareness
In Sermon 108 of Nahjul Balagha, Imam Ali (AS) poignantly describes a state of disconnection among people, where outward appearances and actions do not align with inner purpose. He asks:
"What is the matter with me! I see you just bodies without spirits and spirits without bodies, devotees without good, traders without profits, wakeful but sleeping, present but unseen, seeing but blind, hearing but deaf and speaking but dumb."
This description perfectly mirrors the disconnect that can occur when people fail to align their material actions with their spiritual essence. In the broader context of Sensing (S) and Intuition (N) cognitive functions, Imam Ali (AS) highlights how individuals, particularly S-types, can focus so intensely on the material world—on tasks and duties—that they become disconnected from the spiritual and deeper purpose behind those actions. S-users, grounded in practicality, may sometimes miss the spiritual dimension of their actions, making them seem like “bodies without spirits,” just as Imam Ali (AS) describes. This can be a dangerous path, where actions are taken but lack the deeper alignment with divine wisdom and guidance.
However, this disconnect is not limited to S-users alone. Even N-types, who often explore the deeper meanings and possibilities, can fall into the trap of spiritual slumber if their intuitive insights are not grounded in action or divine alignment. Imam Ali (AS) urges all of us to reconnect, not just in external deeds but in an integrated alignment of body, mind, and soul with divine principles.
The Qur’an and the Ahlulbayt (AS) serve as the ultimate guides for reconnecting to this deeper nourishment that sustains both the physical and spiritual dimensions of our existence. The nourishment they provide restores balance and aligns the inner being with the laws of creation, ensuring that actions are rooted in divine wisdom and justice.
